Is food dye a pigment?

i would like to know if food dye ,like the kind at a store, is a pigment.

Is food dye a pigment?
Sometimes food coloring is a dye; sometimes it is a pigment. A dye is soluble in water or other solvent. A pigment is insoluble. If it is a little bottle called, "food coloring," it is probably a dye.
Reply:No, food dyes are organic compounds. Pigments are inorganic,ie they do not typically have carbon as a part of the

molecule. Pigments are inorganics such as Titanium dioxide,

iron oxide, cadmium oxide. Pigments are typically used in products requiring u.v. light stability such as plastics. Organic

food dyes are large organic compounds that are non-toxic.
